Black Lives Matter - DEI Statement

The Joliet Junior College President's Diversity and Inclusion Council shared the following message with the campus community on June 17, 2020.

The recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks are heavy on our hearts and minds. This loss of life, coupled with the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, starkly illustrates the inequities within socioeconomic and racial demographic groups, and especially our black community. Joliet Junior College stands in solidarity with the black community. Black Lives Matter. 

Many of us are intimately affected and feel overwhelmed. It is imperative to listen, reflect, and self-educate in order to contribute to the change we need to be and need to see. As Dr. Mitchell has stated, JJC does not tolerate violence, injustice, and the systemic racism still rooted in our community and nation. As the Diversity and Inclusion Council continues to support the college's goals in the DEI plan, we have created a college statement that we will use to stand publicly in support of this movement.

The council encourages the campus community to join this movement, share this message, and live our diversity, equity and inclusion statements so that everyone feels welcome and safe at our institution. Files and support resources are available to JJC employees through the MyJJC Portal.
