Privacy Statement

Joliet Junior College (JJC) is committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring the security of your personal information. This Privacy Statement outlines our practices regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of information through our website (JJC.edu) and other communication channels, including SMS texting.

Personal Information (PI)

“Personal Information” is any information that can reasonably be used to identify you directly or indirectly, such as your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, student ID or social security number. The JJC website only collects personal information which you knowingly and voluntarily provide. Any information that you voluntarily provide will not be sold or traded to a third party. JJC only shares information about you to other parties when one or more of the following conditions apply:

  • We have your consent to share the information; 
  • We are required by law to provide the information; 
  • To address fraud, security, or technical issues; or
  • To protect the rights and safety of our students, users, or others.

JJC might also share personal information with third parties, but only after ensuring proper safeguards are in place. Examples include:

  • Educational platform providers and course partners: To support the System’s processing purposes and activities.
  • Government entities (U.S., state, local, and foreign): To meet regulatory obligations (e.g., visa processing) and facilitate access to funding sources (e.g., financial aid).
  • Partner institutions: To support study abroad activities.
  • Service providers: To enable the full range of System functions (e.g., cloud storage, software, chatbots).
  • Information requestors: In accordance with freedom of information laws.
  • Vendors: To provide services related to an individual’s affiliation with JJC (e.g., printing diplomas, arranging housing) and to enhance JJC outreach efforts.

Individuals who apply to JJC should review our FERPA page for more information. JJC does not sell or distribute your information to advertisers. Library records are considered confidential information.

Automatically Collected Information

Whenever you visit or interact with our website, we automatically gather and store the following information about your visit. This information is stored and used in aggregate only, and is not used to contact you personally: 

  • The IP address from which you access our website
  • The name of the domain from which you access the internet 
  • The type of browser and operating system used to access our website
  • The date and time that you access our site
  • The pages, files, documents, and links that you visit
  • The internet address of the website from which you linked to our website

We also collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you:

  • Register for courses or events
  • Apply for admission or financial aid
  • Subscribe to our newsletters or alerts
  • Participate in surveys or feedback forms
  • Communicate with us via email, phone, or SMS

SMS Communication

JJC may use SMS (text messaging) to send transactional messages related to the services we provide. With your consent, we may also send promotional messages about college events, programs, and opportunities.

Consent for SMS Communication

  • By providing your phone number and consent, you agree to receive text messages from JJC for both transactional and promotional purposes.
  • You may opt out of text messages at any time by replying “STOP” to any message.

 JJC uses personal information to:

  • Comply with legal obligations

Sharing of Information 

Personal information is not shared with third parties except as necessary to provide college services or as required by law. The SMS consent provided is specific to Joliet Junior College and will not be transferred to any third parties. We take reasonable measures to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, and disclosure.

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to outside parties except as described in this Privacy Statement.

Cookies

Cookies are small pieces of information sent to your browser by a website that you visit. Cookies are used to track usage patterns, traffic trends and customer behavior, and record other information from the website. When you perform actions or register on the website, cookies also allow us to save information so that you will not have to re-enter it the next time you visit. We prohibit any third parties who receive user information for this purpose from using or sharing user information for any purpose other than providing services for the benefit of our users.

Google Analytics monitors web traffic. Google Analytics provides us with aggregate data which contains no specific information that can be linked to an individual.  If you wish to opt out of this web tracking, Google Analytics provides an opt-out browser plugin.

We may also provide your information to third parties in circumstances where we believe that doing so is necessary or appropriate to satisfy any applicable law, regulation, legal process or governmental request; to detect, prevent or otherwise address fraud, security, or technical issues; or to protect our rights and safety and the rights and safety of our users or others.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes. All other categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.

Other Websites and Cookies

This website may contain links to other websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such websites. Cookies for those sites are set by parties other than JJC. These “third-party cookies” may, for example, originate from websites such as YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or other social media services for which our web domain has implemented “plug-ins.” Since the cookie policies of these sites change over time, you should determine their policies by visiting the Privacy Statement pages of these sites directly.

Data Security 

JJC takes the security of your personal information seriously. JJC has implemented reasonable physical, technical, and administrative procedures to safeguard and secure all information we collect online against loss, misuse, or alteration of the information under our control.

 You have the right to:

  • Access and update your personal information;
  • Opt-out of receiving communications from us; and
  • Request the deletion of your personal information, subject to legal requirements.

JJC reserves the right to amend this online Privacy Statement at any time, without notice, and only the current privacy statement may be deemed effective.
