Message from Chef Michael McGreal, Department Chair
Joliet Junior College, established in 1901, is the first community college in the nation. Erected in a working-class area just outside of Chicago, JJC provides affordable college classes and degree programs to members of the surrounding community. The institution has grown immensely over its hundred-plus-years in existence, while always maintaining its "small town" appeal.
In 1969, the college decided to again become a pioneer in education by instituting a culinary arts and restaurant management curriculum to meet the needs of a fast-growing industry. JJC was only the fifth American institution to offer professional training in the culinary arts. Now with just over 3,800 culinary training schools in the United States, Joliet is still ranked among the best. The faculty is composed of all full- time, multi-certified chef and hospitality instructors with a combined total of over 140 years of industry experience.
But don't think that we rest on the reputation of our outstanding faculty here at JJC. The Culinary Arts Program is a submersion in hands-on training and practice in core aspects of the industry from cooking methods and sanitation to nutrition, culinary management and purchasing. Successful completion of the program results in an associate's of applied (AAS) degree, taught by experts in the industry. When a student graduates from this program, he or she can be proud to know that they have graduated from one of the most well respected and well-known culinary schools in the world.
We also currently offer three baking and pastry arts certificates and expect to offer an associate's degree in baking and pastry arts in the near future. Why pay the high fees and excessive tuition at a private school, when JJC is not only affordable, but also provides an exceptional education and real-life experience.
In addition to the exceptional faculty and education that we offer at JJC, we can't leave out the extras that make our programs unique. Students can try out for a spot on our Culinary Hot Foods Competition Team or Knowledge Bowl Competition Team, attend one of our summer European excursions, opt to apply for a yearlong Germany externship, or join one of our student clubs, such as the Epicurean Club or the Competitive Cooking Club. Whatever your preference, JJC has something to offer.
Oh, and if it's jobs your interested in, our graduates are sought out for employment all over the world. Recruiters from companies such as Disney, Marriott Corporation, and many others actively recruit our students, even before graduation! If you're ready to begin training for one of the most exciting, fast-paced and rewarding industries out there, or if you would simply like to request more information on our world renowned Culinary Arts Program, please call (815) 280-1255.
Cheers,
Chef Michael McGreal
