JJC Culinary Instructor Receives Award at Shorewood HUGS Chocolate Ball

Joliet Junior College chef instructor Mark Muszynski is the newest name on a growing list of accolades for the JJC culinary arts department. Chef Muszynski received the 2025 Lynne Lichtenauer Making a Difference Award from Shorewood HUGS at the annual Chocolate Ball.

“When I found out about receiving the award, it was quite a surprise,” Muszynski said. “I had no clue that I was being considered for this award but am very honored to be able to represent Lynne's drive and passion for a great cause.

Receiving this award is truly an honor. Knowing Lynne from the early years of this event and how much she put her heart and soul into this to be a success every year makes it so special.”

The late Lichtenauer was a 2018 recipient of JJC's J.D. Ross Extraordinary Service Award, having served the JJC community since the late 1970s in a wealth of roles. Similarly, Muszynski and the JJC culinary department have given back to Shorewood HUGS and the Chocolate Ball for over a decade.

Chef Muszynski and a few JJC culinary students make two chocolate tasting desserts for the annual event.

“I enjoy involving my students in the event to give them experience,” Muszynski said. “But also maybe they will see how giving back can be so rewarding.”

Chef Michael McGreal, JJC department chair, typically contributes an ice sculpture as well to go with the event’s theme. This year’s theme was Kentucky Derby - Run for the Roses.

“The event has a new theme every year, but the goal is always the same: make wishes come true for those in need,” Muszynski said.

“When Chef Mark was asked about supporting this event by preparing chocolates and pastries, he immediately accepted,” McGreal said. “Each year I am impressed by his volunteering spirit and his commitment to helping Shorewood HUGS raise funds to support those in need in our community.

Chef Mark demonstrates that same kindness and care in the classroom and has helped to shape the lives and careers of many students over the years. He embodies the soul of the hospitality industry and exemplifies the mission of the Lynn Lichtenauer Making a Difference Award. He is a very deserving recipient and all of us in the JJC culinary arts management department are very proud of him.”
