JJC Joins Nation in 2024 HSI Week Celebration

Joliet Junior College (JJC) proudly joins the nation in celebrating Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week from Sept. 9-15, 2024. This week, which occurs annually right before National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), highlights the contributions of HSIs across the country.

JJC announced its HSI designation in April 2024, a significant milestone that reflects the College’s ongoing commitment to serving its diverse student body and community.

An HSI, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education, is an institution where at least 25% of full-time equivalent undergraduate students identify as Hispanic. JJC's Hispanic student population has grown steadily from 11.3% in fall 2000 to 34% in fall 2023, and further growth is anticipated.

“With this designation, JJC reaffirms its commitment to bridging achievement gaps and cultivating responsive and inclusive learning environments,” said Dr. Clyne Namuo, JJC president. “As an HSI, Joliet Junior College stands poised to embark on a new chapter of excellence, empowerment and equitable student outcomes.”

Throughout HSI Week, JJC will take to social media to spotlight the trailblazing students, faculty, staff and administrators who have contributed to the College's rich history and helped lay the foundation for this HSI designation. Followers can look forward to posts celebrating the individuals who have made significant contributions to the JJC community and beyond.

“We’re excited to share the incredible work of our faculty and staff who dedicate themselves to educating our students,” said Tricia Rosado, HSI manager. “Watch our feed as we highlight the remarkable people who make JJC one of the best institutions for preparing students for their future.”

In addition to its social media campaign, JJC offers a variety of programs and support services focused on Hispanic culture and language, helping both the college community succeed in their educational journeys.
