JJC Honors 763 Graduates, Celebrates 109th Commencement

Joliet Junior College (JJC) proudly celebrated its 109th annual commencement ceremony, recognizing 763 graduates, the largest graduating class in JJC's history.

Nearly 4,000 guests gathered in the Event Center to honor the achievements of the class of 2025.

The ceremony highlighted the transformative journey of JJC students, with college leadership reflecting on their growth and resilience.

“At JJC, you did more than attend classes — you sparked dialogue, advanced justice and gave voice to causes that matter,” said Dr. Clyne Namuo, JJC president. “You are not the same person who first walked through our doors. You are sharper. Stronger. More awake to the world and your place in it.”

Olivia Arias, a graduate in process control and instrumentation technology (PCIT) and electrical/electronic automated systems (EEAS), delivered an inspiring address as the 2025 student commencement speaker. Arias, who also earned eight career certifications, has been interning with ExxonMobil and will continue in a co-op role following graduation. She will also participate in a work-study exchange program in Germany.

“I stand here before you representing the 8% of Latinas in STEM, and the less than 5% of women in skilled trade occupations,” said Arias. “We all have the power to create and define what our futures will look like. Be brave and take risks.”

Arias also announced the creation of the “She Conduit” scholarship, a personal gift to support future students in the EEAS and PCIT programs.

Dr. Bob Marcink, English and journalism professor and longtime faculty adviser for the student-run newspaper “The Blazer,” addressed the audience as the faculty speaker. Marcink, who is retiring after 28 years at JJC, encouraged graduates to embrace community and connection.

“To commence means to begin,” said Marcink. “It is a new beginning for all of you who have worked so hard to get here… But as we gather to celebrate YOU, let’s also take time to celebrate US.”

Marcink is widely respected for his mentorship, integrity and leadership, having served as faculty union president for 18 years and negotiated six contracts during his tenure.

Dr. Karl Brooks, vice president for student development, presented the 2025 student service recognition award to Mary Lee for her outstanding contributions to campus life and the community. Lee, who earned an associate’s degree and a certificate in human services, has been a leader in student organizations such as Pride Alliance and Active Minds and a volunteer with the Crisis Text Line.

“Mary has distinguished herself through advocacy, compassion and a deep commitment to helping others,” said Dr. Brooks.

Lee will continue her education at Lewis University to pursue a career as a licensed clinical social worker.

Each graduating class of Joliet Junior College contributes a distinctive mark to the institution’s proud legacy. JJC continues to stand as more than just a destination for education — it is a launchpad for students embarking on the next chapters of their lives. The class of 2025 exemplifies this mission, stepping confidently into the world as leaders, innovators and changemakers, ready to shape what comes next.
