JJC Honors Outstanding Graduates for 2025 Commencement

Joliet Junior College (JJC) announces Olivia Arias and Mary Lee as the 2025 student commencement speaker and student service recognition award winner, respectively.

Each year, the graduation committee accepts nominations from faculty and staff for students with exceptional stories, achievements and service contributions acquired during their time at JJC for recognition at the annual commencement ceremony.

Olivia Arias will graduate with degrees in process control and instrumentation technology (PCIT) and electrical/electronic automated systems (EEAS) and eight additional career certifications. Inspired by her family's legacy at JJC and the support from her teachers, Arias has excelled in her technical programs.

"Olivia is an excellent multilingual student who actively participates in class and assists classmates in need," said Mary Sue Gurka, technical education professor. "Her hard work and collaborative spirit shine through her academic achievements. Beyond the classroom, Olivia has shown remarkable dedication and leadership in community service."

Arias was actively involved in the International Society of Automation club, where she served as president, participated in competitions and expanded opportunities for students from technical programs to participate. She also contributed to the Polished Pebbles events, introducing girls from low-income areas to STEM careers.

Her journey at JJC has been transformative, building her confidence and technical skills, and preparing her for a promising career.

"JJC has truly changed my life for the better," said Arias. "I've overcome many physical, emotional and mental barriers. Entering a male-dominated field was intimidating, but my programs at JJC helped me develop confidence in both my technical skills and myself."

Arias has been interning with ExxonMobil for several months leading up to graduation and will continue with the company in a co-op position following commencement. Immediately after commencement, she will embark on a work-study exchange trip to Germany with the technical department. She is honored to be chosen as the student speaker and looks forward to sharing her experiences and inspiring her fellow graduates.

Mary Lee, student service award winner, will graduate with an associate degree in human services and a certificate of achievement in human services at JJC. Her passion for understanding human behavior and helping others was ignited by personal experiences and challenges.

Lee was deeply involved in organizations like Pride Alliance and Active Minds, advocating for mental health awareness and inclusivity. Her volunteer work with the Crisis Text Line has allowed her to offer crisis intervention services to those in need.

"My passion for service stems from my deeply ingrained belief in the inherent worth of every person, as full, complex, worthy people," said Lee. "I view service not only as an opportunity to help others but as a means of connecting with the community, creating spaces of healing and modeling a world I hope for my children to live in."

Her time at JJC has equipped her with the knowledge, skills and resilience needed to make an impact in the field of human services.

After graduation, Lee will continue her education at Lewis University, pursuing a bachelor's degree in social work, followed by a master's program to become a licensed clinical social worker. Receiving the student service award is a "humbling honor" for Lee, affirming her commitment to service and inspiring her to continue making a difference in her community.

The JJC commencement ceremony will take place on Friday, May 16 at 4 p.m. in the Event Center on Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road. The ceremony will recognize graduates from summer 2024 and fall 2024, along with prospective graduates from spring 2025 and summer 2025. More than 520 students are expected to participate.

For those unable to attend in person, a livestream of the ceremony will be available. Additional details on streaming, event logistics and commencement information can be found by visiting the JJC graduation webpage.
