The Joliet Junior College (JJC) Foundation has awarded $1,000,522 in donor-funded scholarships to students in the 2023-24 school year. The substantial amount awarded positions the JJC Foundation as one of the leading entities among Illinois community college foundations, emphasizing its commitment to fostering educational advancement and access.
“Surpassing one million dollars in student scholarships is a testament to the profound impact donor support has on an institution,” said Kristi Mulvey, executive director of the Foundation. “Everyone at JJC extends their heartfelt gratitude to all our donors, whose generosity both big and small — has made a monumental difference in the lives of our students. Your belief in the power of education and your commitment to empowering others have opened doors of opportunity and transformed countless lives.”
In the 2022-23 school year, the Foundation gifted over $870,000 to deserving students. This year's total award of $1,000,522 represents a substantial increase in scholarship funding, highlighting the Foundation's dedication to expanding opportunities for JJC students. The $1,000,522 awarded was spread across 790 scholarships, benefiting a diverse range of students across various academic disciplines.
"Through donor-funded scholarships, we are paving the way for a brighter, more equitable future,” said Dr. Clyne Namuo, JJC president. “Education is the great equalizer, offering pathways to success regardless of background or circumstance. By investing in the Foundation, we empower individuals to break barriers, fulfill their potential and create a wave of generational change in the lives of our students, their families and our community.”
Established in 1973, the Joliet Junior College Foundation has been instrumental in providing financial assistance to students pursuing their academic goals at Joliet Junior College. Over the past 50 years, the Foundation has seen remarkable growth, with total assets surpassing $36 million and $18.5 million in endowments.
These scholarships provide crucial financial support for tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses, enabling students to focus on their studies and pursue their career aspirations.
Those considering donations to the JJC Foundation have two options to leave their legacy at the nation’s first community college. Annual scholarship donations begin at $500 and provide the donor the flexibility to choose the criteria for potential recipients. Endowed scholarship donations begin at $30,000. The contribution becomes principal in a permanent investment account and a portion of annual earnings fund the scholarship award.
“Both annual and endowed scholarship funds are excellent ways to commemorate the contributions of an individual, company or organization to the College,” said Mulvey
After celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Foundation in 2023, the Foundation hopes to build on its success, thanks to the ongoing support of its donors.
"Your donation to the JJC Foundation isn't just a gift; it's an investment in the future of our students and community,” said Mulvey. “Together, we're building a tomorrow where every dream finds support, every ambition finds wings, and every student finds a pathway to a brighter future.”
