JJC, Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel Kick Off 'Prepare for Illinois’ Future' Career Training Program

Joliet Junior College (JJC) hosted Illinois state Sen. Meg Cappel to officially launch the Prepare for Illinois’ Future program — an unprecedented initiative providing free test preparation and professional skills training to thousands of Illinois college students.

“The Prepare for Illinois’ Future program has been a game changer for JJC students,” said JJC president Dr. Clyne Namuo. “Eliminating the barrier associated with test prep has made a tremendous difference. Seventy students have already accessed this program resulting in a cost savings of $30,000.”

The announcement spotlighted the transformative impact of the new initiative — the first of its kind in the U.S. — that offers state-funded access to professional licensure and career readiness courses for all Illinois public university students and those attending select community colleges.

JJC is among five community colleges and 12 four-year institutions in Illinois piloting free access to more than 29 test and licensure prep courses in high-demand fields for community college students such as nursing, real estate, insurance or financial planning. Additionally, students can enroll in career skills courses like project management, interview preparation and career readiness — critical tools as they prepare to enter the workforce.

Since its rollout in late February, the program has already saved students more than $7 million in out-of-pocket costs — an early success that speakers said underscores the urgent need for sustained funding.

"Prepare for Illinois’ Future is direct evidence that we care about our students’ futures,” said state Sen. Cappel, who was joined by fellow supporter state Rep. Natalie Manley. “We want to give them the tools and resources they need to ensure they are prepared for their future careers. This program is an amazing benefit and provides even more support for students exploring high-demand career paths.”

Students also shared personal stories of how the program is accelerating their professional goals — particularly in fields like nursing, where licensure exams are critical to securing employment.

“I am extremely grateful that JJC was able to provide this for free. Preparing for the NCLEX can be expensive — not to mention the test itself,” said Karla Cervantes, a JJC nursing student. “As a student, every dollar counts, so this took a huge financial burden off my shoulders. Passing the NCLEX means everything to me because it is the final step standing between me and the career I’ve worked so hard for.”

The Prepare for Illinois’ Future program is part of a statewide effort to boost enrollment at Illinois public institutions, create career pathways for students from underserved urban and rural communities and address critical workforce shortages in healthcare, education and technology fields.

By participating in this initiative, JJC continues its commitment to student success, workforce development, and accessible education. For more information, visit go.kaplan.com/illinois.
