Joliet Junior College (JJC) has received the prestigious 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, a national honor recognizing colleges and universities across the U.S. for their outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“The DEI team and many other departments at JJC are passionately committed to creating a space where all identities feel they belong,” said Escortina Ervin, chief equity officer. “This award is a reminder that our work is producing positive results.”
This award is a testament to JJC’s ongoing efforts to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all students and employees.
The HEED Award application process is rigorous, requiring institutions to submit comprehensive information about their efforts to recruit and retain diverse students and employees, leadership support for diversity, campus culture and key practices that promote inclusion. Institutions are evaluated on best practices, supplier diversity and overall campus climate, among other criteria.
JJC's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is reflected through various initiatives that create an inclusive environment. These efforts include mandatory cultural competency workshops, all-gender restroom facilities and support for four employee resource groups (Black, Latinx, LGBTQIA+ and community service). JJC also earned the designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution earlier this year, further solidifying its dedication to underrepresented communities.
Key recruitment programs like 12x12x12 dual credit initiative and Next Step Days aim to increase enrollment from underserved populations by providing critical resources and personalized guidance. These initiatives, along with JJC's broader DEI strategies, contributed to the College receiving the 2024 HEED Award, recognizing its commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion on campus.
JJC’s dedication to DEI is embedded in its strategic plan, equity plan and core values, ensuring that diversity remains a central focus of its mission. The full list of this year’s 113 HEED award recipients can be found at insightintodiversity.com.
