Chef for a Day

What better way to get a feel for a career in culinary arts than to spend part of a day in a college culinary arts program? Joliet Junior College is offering a unique opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to experience a broad range of hands-on culinary arts activities. Groups of eight students with a teacher are acceptable but individuals may also make an appointment.


Participants start at 7:45 a.m. in the JJC's demonstration kitchen, with a culinary arts instructor, discussing the menu of the day. At 8:20 a.m., participants move to the main kitchen where food for the college's full-service cafeteria is being prepared.

Following this, there is a 30-minute discussion with food service instructors. Then, it's on to lunch at Chef's Table for $7.00pp. At lunch, participants will be able to ask culinary arts instructors questions about the program and food service topics. The day ends at around 11:30 a.m. with participants discussing their views and sharing opinions. Best of all, it's FREE!


You must wear proper attire when attending the Chef for a Day program. If you do not adhere to these requirements, the instructor/chef has the right to refuse participation. Listed below are the requirements.

  • Long Pants - No shorts, capris, baggy or 54" wide pant legs
  • Leather shoes or tennis shoes - No open-toed shoes, openback shoes, or shoes/boots that cover your pants
  • Wear a shirt made of light weight material (A JJC Chef for the Day jacket will be provided to wear over your shirt)
  • Hair pinned or tied back and must wear the hat provided while in the kitchens
  • No rings/loose jewelry
